Digital Security Facts And Insight: 7 FAQs

Here are some questions we get asked all the time when we perform security assessments:

  1. Does it cost a lot to have extra (or any) security? Your business can certainly use security measures that won’t cost anything other than the time it takes to install it. Being aware is the first step in understanding how to protect your business data from a virus.
  2. Do I really need to update the security software when I get prompted? Yes! We could leave it at that, but let’s expand upon it. When you’re prompted to do an update, there is a reason and that reason is typically to install a patch to protect you and your data. Don’t put it off.
  3. Do I really need an antivirus program? Again, yes. If you’re operating Windows 10 it has Windows Defender built right in. It is good enough, but there are antivirus programs that are better and Windows Defender is better than not having any.
  4. If I go to a trusted website I am all right… right? No. You don’t know if a site that looks legitimate has been hijacked or duplicated. Hackers are good at duplicating sites and installing ransomware or malware that will infect you once you click on it.
  5. Should our business even do online banking? Yes, for the most part, banks utilize military-grade security and it’s rare that a bank is hacked – but it does happen.
  6. My business is small, why would a hacker target me? Why wouldn’t a hacker target you? Smaller businesses are typically easier for a hacker to get into simply because they don’t have enough security in place to protect themselves.
  7. An employee inadvertently opened an attachment in an email. What now? Take a breath, but know that your system has probably been infected. Immediately close all programs, do a full security virus scan. Contact a professional to do a deep dive risk assessment.

Have you found yourself sitting for hours staring at your computer screen pondering over what to say? And you think to yourself, “If my thoughts would only mysteriously appear in proper format on my computer into my novel.” Then you ask yourself, “What am I doing?” So, you are hunched over your computer rereading and rewriting until you change a word or two and just like magic you have written another paragraph. When nothing else comes to mind, get a pen and pad and write about yourself. What are your likes, dislikes, wants and needs, hobbies and heart desires?
